Daily Requirements
Vitamin C
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends an intake of 100mg vitamin C per day. The recommended daily intake according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is 80mg.
The DGE recommendations increase to an intake of 105mg of vitamin C per day during pregnancy, while individuals who are breastfeeding are recommended a further 20mg per day (for a total of 125mg vitamin C daily). They provide the following daily intake recommendations for children and adolescents:
- 0–4 years old: 20mg
- 4–7 years old: 30mg
- 7–10 years old: 45mg
- 10–13 years old: 65mg
- 13–15 years old: 85mg
- 15–19 years old: 105mg
As the body can only absorb a limited amount into tissues at once before they reach saturation, and because blood levels of the vitamin drop relatively soon after ingestion, the intake of vitamin C should be distributed throughout the day.
Zinc
The DGE recommends an intake of 7–10mg zinc per day for women and 11–16mg of zinc for men.
The DGE recommendations increase to an intake of 9–13mg of zinc per day during pregnancy, while individuals who are breastfeeding are recommended a further 2–3mg per day (for a total of 11–14mg zinc daily). They provide the following daily intake recommendations for children and adolescents:
- 1–4 years old: 3mg
- 4–7 years old: 4mg
- 7–10 years old: 6mg
- 10–13 years old: 8–9mg
- 13–15 years old: 10–12mg
- 15–19 years old: 11–14mg
