How are we different?

For hundreds of years, mushroom cultivators in China have been producing some of the most potent medicinal mushrooms worldwide. Traditional Chinese medicine has guided this development for over 2,000 years, with techniques being refined to such an extent that cultivated mushrooms are now in no way inferior to their wildcrafted predecessors. Our tinder conk mushrooms are sourced directly from the globally-recognised mushroom-growing region of Gutian County in Fujian. Our farming partner places a high value on natural, traditional cultivation methods which do not include the use of pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. The mushrooms are selectively harvested by hand between July and October, at their peak nutritional value.

The polysaccharides contained in medicinal mushrooms, particularly (1-3)-β-d-glucan and (1-6)-β-d-glucan, are some of their most prized ingredients. Our mushroom extracts retain these compounds through the traditional extraction which uses only water and food grade ethanol. The resulting concentrate is highly potent; a pure and wholesome extract with absolutely no toxic extraction residues or chemical release agents (such as acetone, n-hexane or methanol).

In contrast to extracts, which can lose some of their nutritional value during processing, powders contain the full spectrum of nutrients and enzymes for a particularly strong adaptogenic effect. To ensure that the nutrients of the mushroom are optimally available to the body, we finely mill the dried mushrooms to a size of less than 0.1mm, according to the "shell-broken" method. This milling process breaks open the difficult-to-digest cells of the mushroom and makes their contents directly bioavailable.

Tinder Conk

Fomes fomentarius (tinder conk, tinder fungus, false tinder fungus, (horse's) hoof fungus, tinder polypore, ice man fungus)

Oetzi, a man who lived about 5,000 years ago and who is now known as the Iceman, was found in the Oetztal Alps in 1991 carrying tinder conk. The fruiting body of the fungus he kept with him is tough and woody and can be used to start fires. Its use goes as far back as the time of Hippocrates of Kos (c. 370 BC), who documented its effect as a medicinal mushroom. The mushroom is widespread in Asia, North America and Europe. It is a typical sight in old deciduous forests and can also be found in bogs and moorlands. It is rich in polysaccharides, with 42% insoluble beta-glucans, and was named fungus of the year in 1995.

Cultivation & Processing

Our medicinal mushrooms are sourced from Gutian County in Fujian, China, a region 600-700m above sea level which is renowned for its cultivation of mushrooms. The cultivation of mushrooms is an age-old tradition in this region, as is reflected by their unparalleled quality. The pristine, fertile land and climate, protected by dense mountain forests, as well as the use of sophisticated substrates, provides an ideal environment for the mushrooms to thrive and develop exceptional levels of nutrients and a high concentration of phytochemicals. Our untreated mushrooms are cultivated without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers. They are grown to full maturity and hand-picked as their content of bioactives reaches its peak, between July and October.

In order to preserve the high concentration of beta-glucans contained in the mushrooms, their gently dried and milled fruiting bodies and stalks can be prepared as an extract. The water extraction is performed according to traditional methods that have been a part of Chinese as well as Western medicine for centuries. This type of extraction is among the gentlest and has long been used to create plant extracts. Our ultra-pure extract is thus free from any toxic residues of chemical solvents (such as acetone, N-hexane and methanol).

Mushrooms can retain their raw quality as a result of gentle drying at temperatures below 40°C. This process preserves the delicate enzymes and potent bioactives of the mushrooms. To ensure that these are bioavailable, the dried mushrooms are then gently milled. Thanks to our use of the "shell-broken" method, the powder reaches a fineness of less than 0.1mm, which ensures that the compounds within the cells are optimally available for absorption. The resulting powder contains the full richness of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and trace elements of the whole fruiting body of the mushroom.
