Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) - also known as Satavar, Shatamull and Shatawari - is a species of asparagus native to Africa, South Asia (including the Indian subcontinent) and northern Australia. Shatavari is a small, thorny bush with a rhizome consisting of many roots 30-100cm long and up to 2cm thick. The leaves resemble soft needles and the flowers are white, which develop into red berries containing a seed. The fine roots of this wild asparagus are used in a variety of ways. Shatavari is considered one of the most important plants for women and contains a high content of valuable saponins.
