For optimal results, the saliva test should be performed between the 19th and 21st day of the menstrual cycle, given a 28-day cycle. If the menstrual cycle is longer or shorter than 28 days, the test can be performed about 5-6 days before the expected start of bleeding. If the cycle is very irregular, the test should be carried out in the second half of the menstrual cycle, if it can be determined.
No tablets or capsules containing hormones should be taken for at least 12 hours before the test and no creams or gels containing hormones should be applied for 24-48 hours before the test.
The three saliva samples are taken 30 minutes apart in the morning. The enclosed set of instructions details the exact procedure to follow.
On the day of sample collection, the following points should be noted:
- Take the saliva sample before or at least 30 minutes after brushing teeth
- Do not mix the saliva with blood (e.g., from bleeding gums) and do not use mouthwash
- Rinse mouth with clean water before taking the sample and wait until saliva flow has normalised
- Do not eat or drink before or during collection of the saliva sample, as food may contain hormones which may skew the results
- Follow the instructions while taking the sample
After taking the sample:
- Return it free of charge in the enclosed mailing bag, preferably not directly before the weekend or national holidays
