Resveratrol is a polyphenol and has already been discovered in more than 72 plant species. It became known as a naturally occurring component of red wine. It is particularly concentrated in the skins of red grapes and serves as a natural defense and protective substance for the plant against parasites, fungal attack and adverse weather conditions such as moisture, UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.
Resveratrol exists in two different geometric variants; so-called isomers: Cis-Resveratrol and Trans-Resveratrol. Only the trans form develops its full biological and physical properties. Cis-resveratrol occurs far less frequently in nature than the bioactive trans-resveratrol.
