Finest Origin - Highest Grade

These clementine trees grow near the coast in north-eastern Corsica. Clementines are one of the three citrus varieties originally cultivated on the island of Beauté. Corsica's Mediterranean climate offers optimal growing conditions that promote the harmonious development of natural ingredients such as sabinine, linalool, limonene and trans-beta-ocimene in the plants. The trees are pruned by hand in March. The fresh, young shoots with the fruit from the pruning are processed in the local distillery using gentle steam to produce this very aromatic essential oil.

Farm

We source this essential oil from a small family business in Corsica, which is the third generation to grow plants there. The cultivation has been certified by Demeter and certified organic since the mid-1980s and the passion for producing essential oils began around 1990 with a small distillery, which was replaced by a larger one in 2003. The company also specialises in the production of essential oils from hand-harvested local wild plants. In order to expand the product range, a selection of oils is sourced from certified organic partners whose origins and standards are well documented. The essential oils and other natural products bear the EU organic seal.

Clementine

The clementine (Citrus clementina) belongs to the rue family (Rutaceae). The hybrid plant is an accidental cross between the sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) and the Mediterranean mandarin (Citrus deliciosa). The clementine was first discovered and botanically described in the late 19th century by the Trappist monk Frère Clément (1839-1904) in the garden he looked after near Oran, Algeria. The plant was named Clementine in his honour in 1902. The evergreen tree, which grows up to 2.5 metres tall, has glossy dark green leaves and produces highly fragrant white flowers in spring, which develop into orange fruits in winter.
