Tremella (Tremella fuciformis)

Also known as snow fungus and white jelly mushroom, the tremella is one of the most popular mushrooms in Chinese cuisine and tradition. Its manner of growth is particularly fascinating as it is actually a form of yeast that alone cannot produce a fruiting body. Tremella first exists in mucous form and grows until it encounters a suitable host; a member of the Annulohypoxylon genus of fungi. When these two fungi meet, the tremella forms a parasitic relationship with its host, its cells merge with the host, and from this fusion a tremella mushroom can grow.

The tremella mushroom is known for its culinary uses in Chinese and Taiwanese food, as well as for its cosmetic uses as an ingredient in beauty and anti-ageing products.

Our functional mushrooms are sourced from the renowned mushroom-growing region of Gutian County (600–700m above sea level), in Fujian, China. The cultivation of mushrooms is an age-old tradition in the region, as is reflected by the unparalleled quality of these mushrooms. The fertile land, sophisticated substrates and the climate all contribute to a uniquely nutritious end product. Moreover, these pristine lands are protected by dense mountain forests, thus providing an ideal environment for the mushrooms to thrive. Our untreated mushrooms are certified organically grown according to EU standards. They are grown to full maturity and hand-picked at the peak of their vitality, between July and October.

The mushrooms retain their raw quality as a result of gentle drying at temperatures below 40°C. This process preserves the delicate enzymes and potent bioactives of the mushrooms. To ensure that these nutrients are bioavailable, the dried mushrooms are then gently milled. Thanks to our use of the "shell-broken" method, the powder attains a fineness of less than 0.125mm, which ensures that the compounds within the cells as well as within the chitin skeleton of the mushroom are optimally available for absorption. The powder contains the full richness of enzymes, vitamins, minerals and trace elements of the whole fruiting body of the mushroom.

To further concentrate the beneficial beta-glucans present in the mushrooms, we transform the gently dried and finely ground fruiting bodies and stems into an extract. Following traditional methods, we employ water as the sole extraction medium. Water extracts have been an integral part of Chinese tradition and Western herbalism for centuries, serving as a preferred technique for producing plant extracts. This gentle extraction method results in a highly pure extract, completely free from any toxic residues of chemical solvents such as acetone, N-hexane or methanol.
