How are we different?

Our functional mushrooms are sourced from the renowned mushroom-growing region of Gutian County (600–700m above sea level), in Fujian, China. The wealth of knowledge passed down through Chinese tradition for over 2000 years regarding the benefits and cultivation of these mushrooms is truly exceptional. Today, Chinese cultivators produce the most potent mushrooms, having refined their cultivation methods to the point where the cultivated mushrooms rival their wild counterparts. Our partner farm prioritises natural and traditional cultivation techniques. The mushrooms are hand-picked as their content of bioactives reaches its peak, between July and October.

Mushrooms are composed of the fruiting body, which typically appears above ground, and the mycelium underneath. The most important compounds in functional mushrooms are concentrated within the fruiting body, but due to mycelia being faster and easier to cultivate, products derived from the mycelium are common despite being of lesser value. Our mushroom powders and extracts are exclusively made from the entire fruiting body (including the stalk), preserving the valuable compounds in each mushroom.

Among these nutrients, the mushroom polysaccharides – especially the beta-(1-3),(1-6)-D-glucans – are particularly beneficial. Our mushroom extracts are carefully crafted to concentrate these substances. The gentle extraction process strictly follows traditional methods, using water only, ensuring a highly pure product; as a result, our extracts are free from any toxic residues left behind by chemical solvents like acetone, N-hexane or methanol.

In contrast to extracts, which can lose some of their nutritional value during processing, powders contain the full spectrum of nutrients and enzymes for a particularly strong adaptogenic effect. To ensure that these nutrients are optimally bioavailable, our powder is gently ground according to the "shell-broken" method to a size of less than 0.1mm. This milling process breaks open the difficult-to-digest cells of the mushroom and makes their contents directly bioavailable.

The combination of mushroom powder and extract creates a rich combination of the full spectrum of all ingredients, with a high concentration of the valuable beta-glucans.

Shiitake (Lentinula edodes, Hua gu)

After the button mushroom (champignon), the shiitake is perhaps the most important edible mushroom in the world. Its special umami aroma and its firm texture have helped it to achieve culinary fame, particularly in Asian cuisine, earning it the nickname "king of mushrooms."

The shiitake grows on dead wood in the deciduous forests of Japan, China and Vietnam, where it has been used as food for thousands of years and is also considered one of the most important functional mushrooms. Its use in the Chinese tradition is documented in writings dating back over 2000 years where it is praised as the "elixir of life."

Cultivation & Processing

Our mushrooms are sourced from the renowned mushroom-growing region of Gutian County in Fujian, China, where the cultivation of mushrooms is an age-old tradition, as is reflected by their unparalleled quality. The pristine, fertile land and climate, protected by dense mountain forests, as well as the use of sophisticated substrates, provides an ideal environment for the mushrooms to thrive and develop exceptional levels of nutrients and a high concentration of phytochemicals. Our untreated mushrooms are cultivated without pesticides. They are grown to full maturity and hand-picked as their content of bioactives reaches its peak, between July and October.

The mushrooms retain their raw quality as a result of gentle drying at temperatures below 40°C. This process preserves the delicate enzymes and potent bioactives of the mushrooms. To ensure that these are bioavailable, the dried mushrooms are gently and finely ground. Thanks to our use of the "shell-broken" method, the powder reaches a fineness of 0.125mm, which ensures that the compounds within the cells are optimally available for absorption. The resulting powder contains the full richness of nutrients of the whole fruiting body of the mushroom.

All our functional mushrooms contain valuable mushroom polysaccharides, in particular beta-(1-3),(1-6)-D-glucans. To further concentrate them, the fruiting bodies of the mushrooms are processed into extracts. The water and food-grade ethanol extraction is performed according to traditional methods that have been a part of Chinese as well as Western herbalism for centuries. This type of extraction is among the gentlest and has long been used to create plant extracts. The result is a pure extract that is free from any toxic residues of chemical solvents (such as acetone, N-hexane, methanol).
