The hibiscus is a plant belonging to the mallow family which is native to tropically warm regions around the world. There are approximately 300 different kinds of hibiscus, and they can include both annual and perennial varieties. The most studied hibiscus is the Hibiscus sabdariffa, which is the variety used in our fruit powder.

Hibiscus sabdariffa is an annual herb that grows up to 2.4m high and builds deep roots. The stalk is dark green and red with dark green leaves and red leaf veins. The flower calyx is the most commonly used portion of the plant. After the flower petals have bloomed and fallen away, this fleshy flower base remains attached to the stalk. Both parts of the flower can be harvested, dried, and used for a great variety of fruity and colourful drinks and desserts.

Our hibiscus powder is made from the hand-picked calyces (flowers) of organic hibiscus grown in the fertile Nile Valley of Egypt. The hibiscus plants enjoy ideal growing conditions in this subtropical climate near the river.

The hibiscus flowers for our powder are sourced directly from certified organic farming near Luxor and Assuan. The high water quality of the Nile headwaters as well as the emphasis on traditional and wholesome cultivation methods not only guarantee a first-class product, but also contribute to the sustainable usage of natural resources. The subtropical weather conditions of the region further ensure the optimal growth of the hibiscus plants.

After the flower has bloomed, only the flower calyx, which contains the seed pod, remains on the plant. These juicy red calyces are picked by hand and sorted. Thereafter they are laid out in the sun to dry and then milled to a fine, flavourful powder. Our hibiscus flowers are sourced from certified organic cultivation and are therefore free from pesticides and additives.
