The cashew tree grows in tropical climates and bears cashew kernels in a hard shell on its ripe fruits, which are called cashew apples. The tree develops a fine, widely branched root system and grows excellently even in nutrient-poor, dry soils. The name "cashew" is derived from "acaju", which is a word from the native Brazilian Tupi language meaning "kidney tree", referring to the shape of the kernels. Cashews are known for their distinctively mild and subtly sweet flavour and their crunchy, buttery texture.
