How are we different?

The quality as well as phytochemical content of wild bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus, European blueberry) vary greatly between suppliers. The highest-quality bilberries grow wild in their native regions in Europe, as they contain particularly low levels of contaminants from the soil and air. Our organic bilberry powder is ground from certified organic wild bilberries growing deep within the untouched forests of the Baltic region. Our producer works closely with local farmers and places an emphasis on environmental protection as well as ethical and sustainable cultivation and production methods.

Highbush bilberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), the ones normally found in supermarkets, are the most common species of bilberry in the food supply chain. Their light-coloured flesh is indicative of their significantly lower content of bioactives than that of wild bilberries.

Our producer hand-harvests only the ripest berries for us. They have a high phytochemical content and an intense, fruity flavour. This is due to our gentle production process, which involves freeze drying and slowly milling the fruit in order to ensure optimal preservation of the blueberries' potent bioactives.

Other drying processes, such as spray drying, are associated with poor quality, and do not ensure the optimal preservation of phytochemicals. Fruit powders which have not been freeze dried often contain maltodextrin, which then makes up a significant proportion of the overall mass. Sugar and sulphur are also often added to these powders. Moreover, the soil pollution levels, water quality as well as the use of pesticides by some producers have been called into question.

We use environmentally friendly amber glass jars for the packaging of this product.

Bilberries

The bilberry or European blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus/Myrtilli fructus) belongs to the heather family (Ericaceae). It is endemic to the temperate climate zones of Northern Europe and Asia and thrives in semi-shady locations such as deciduous and coniferous forests. The strong, bluish violet colour are indicative of the high amount of potent phytochemicals they contain.

Well-known herbalists such as Pastor Kuenzle (Chrut & Uchrut) and Hildegard from Bingen (Liber compositae medicinae) were aware of the power of these small bilberries centuries ago. Back then, just like today, the fruits of the plant were used primarily, but the leaves were appreciated in herbalism as well. The plant is used both fresh and dried.

Since then, bilberries have gained wider attention and were more recently included in a number of renowned national and international monographs such as ESCOP and WHO.
