Awards

There are a host of important national and international olive oil competitions across the world from New York to Tokyo, as well as in places traditionally associated with olive oil such as Italy and Spain. Among all of these competitions, the Italian Flos Olei guide is one of the most important, having become a point of reference for judging the world's best olive oils. Each year the 500 best oils are given grades out of 100. Within 20 clearly defined categories, various category awards are also given, including various characteristics, best overall oils, and for farming techniques. The jury consists of certified and experienced Italian olive oil tasters and an international network of peers.

Coupage has received top scores at Flos Olei since 2015, even scoring 99 points in recent years. It is thus one of the highest rated Spanish olive oils and the most highly-awarded oil of the farm.

Olive Farm

Oro del Desierto is one of the most famous Spanish olive farms and winner of over 90 medals and awards from the most important international olive oil competitions. The farm's oils regularly rank among the best oils worldwide. Located on the site of an old olive mill in Tabernas, near Almeria, Rafael Alonso acquired the estate in the late 90s and transformed it into one of the leading organic olive oil quality farms. The exceptional location in the Tabernas Desert with 3000 hours of sunshine without significant temperature fluctuations, the extremely fast manual harvest and on-site processing with the latest machinery as well as the local old varieties are the foundation for the top quality of this exceptional family business.

Cultivation & Processing

The Oro del Desierto olive farm is situated in a special location in the Tabernas desert of Andalusia (around 100 kilometres east of Granada near Almeria). The picturesque area became famous as a film set for the Italian westerns shot in the 1960s. With over 3,000 hours of sunshine, low temperature fluctuations and an average annual rainfall of 180 mm at an altitude of 500-600 metres, the conditions here are ideal for the famous, strong olive oils. The farm specialises in the 4 indigenous, old varieties Picual, Lechin, Hojiblanca and Arbequina, but is also particularly famous for its Coupage.

Only around 4 litres of oil are produced per tree on the approximately 100 hectares with 26,000 trees. It only takes 6-8 hours from harvesting (hand harvesting and/or mechanical harvesting, depending on the type and age of the trees) to processing. State-of-the-art machinery is used. The oil is produced by cold extraction through centrifugation at below 25 °C. After filtering (with the exception of unfiltered special quantities), it is stored in stainless steel barrels at 18-22 °C for ageing.

Bottling: by hand and by machine. Oro del Desierto has repeatedly achieved the lowest acidity level in Andalusia (with a value of 0.07%).

The farm is fully certified organic and cultivation is carried out according to high organic standards. All waste products in the process are reused or utilised as compost. The energy is generated 100% from solar panels. The heating of the restaurant is fuelled by olive pits. Andalusian sheep and chickens are integrated into the olive farm for the mutual benefit of the olive trees and animals. The farm's own patented irrigation system leads to 30% water savings compared to the past.
