The Muira puama tree (Ptychopetalum olacoides) grows to a height of around 5m and belongs to the Olacaceae family. It grows in the rainforests of South America - mainly Brazil, Guyana and Surinam. The tree has short leaves that are lighter on the upper side and dark brown on the underside. Its blooms have small flowers that are grouped together in inflorescences and its fragrance is reminiscent of jasmine. After flowering, yellow-orange fruits develop. The roots are elastic, fibrous and strong. They are yellow in color, have a faint odor and taste slightly salty and pungent. The indigenous people living in the Amazon region used practically all parts of the plant - leaves, stems, roots and bark - in traditional medicine. In modern naturopathy, it is mainly the bark and roots, known as "potency wood," that are used.
