Finest Origin - Highest Grade

The mopane tree thrives in the dry, subtropical savannah of Angola. The open grasslands of the savannah experience prolonged periods of heat and dryness as well as rainy periods, offering ideal conditions for developing components such as α-pinene and β-caryophyllene. The precious, resinous seeds are hand-harvested by local indigenous communities with years of experience. To extract the aromatic essential oil, the seeds are gently distilled with steam. The years of experience, special production process, high quality, and passion of the farmers are reflected in the authentic aroma of the mopane oil.

Farm

We source this essential oil from a certified organic producer based in Portugal that specialises in producing organic essential and botanical oils from sustainably harvested, wild plants in collaboration with local communities and farms in Angola. The harvesting is done by hand by the local indigenous communities, with respect for the environment and species protection. The essential oil is extracted directly after harvesting via a gentle steam distillation at the onsite distillery. The quality control department, which is responsible for managing the laboratory and ensuring the efficacy and safety of the products, also plays a fundamental role in the manufacturing process. Their expertise and passion are ultimately reflected in the fine aromas.

Mopane

The mopane tree (Colophospermum mopane) belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae) and is synonymous with the wilderness of the African savannah. The name "mopane" is derived from the word "butterfly", referring to the wing-like shape of its leaves. This tree species is native to southern Africa and grows in hot, dry regions at altitudes of 200 to 1500 metres. The tree, which grows up to 24 metres tall, turns green before the rainy season, when the earth is still brown and dry. The nutritious leaves serve as food for elephants, giraffes, rhinos and mopane caterpillars. The tree's wood is traditionally used for house construction and fences, and smaller branches are chewed for dental care. Mopane is also used in traditional medicine, where it is used to treat eye ailments, stomach cramps and to disinfect wounds.

Aroma

The essential oil fragrance is uniquely soft, creamy, rounded and deep, with subtle notes of turpentine, complemented by hints of spruce, cedar and spices. It has warming, calming, soothing and revitalising properties for body and mind.
