Monk's pepper (Vitex agnus-castus L.), also known as chaste tree, belongs to the genus Vitex and thus to the Verbena family. The shrub, which can grow up to 5m high, grows throughout the Mediterranean region as far as the Crimea and is usually found on embankments or near bodies of water. The name "pepper" comes from the fruits, which look like peppers and taste spicy. The name "monk" is presumably based on the fact that the plant was considered to have a lust-reducing effect in the Middle Ages. The Latin name Agnus castus has a similar meaning and means "chaste lamb."
