The wooded mountain landscape along the Shimanto River offers the Hinoki trees ideal growth conditions to develop their complex natural ingredients and aromas, such as α-pinene, cadinene, muurolene and cedrol. In order to restore the original floral biodiversity of the mountain landscape, the hinoki forests in Kōchi Prefecture are being gently and gradually replaced by species-rich endemic mixed forests in accordance with the principles of sustainable forestry. The Hinoki trees felled for this purpose, which have always been highly revered in Japan, are used in a resource-saving manner, from the wood to the sawdust. The raw material for our Hinoki essential oil is primarily hinoki chips, leftover materials that the manufacturer purchases from a nearby local hinoki sawmill. For the production of the essential oil, these hinoki chips are used and distilled with the gentle process of steam distillation in a stainless steel tank to this complex-aromatic essential oil.

Based in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan, the producer of our premium essential oil has been making its own essential oils from only native plants, sourced from small family-run farms and local producers, since 1998. The company's ethos is based on sustainable and environmentally responsible business practices and as such all aspects of manufacturing are carefully designed for sustainability. The essential oils are obtained on site using gentle steam distillation in a stainless steel tank.

The hinoki tree (Chamaecyparis obtusa) belongs to the cypress family (Cupressaceae). The plant is endemic to Japan and Taiwan and can now also be found on the Korean Peninsula. The branches of the hinoki are branched in the shape of feathers or shells, have dark green, matt-glossy leaves and spherical cones up to 12mm in size. It reaches a growth height of up to 40 meters. The Hinoki tree is deeply revered in Japanese culture and is one of the 'Five Sacred Trees of Kiso' as 'King of the Forest'. Hinoki translates from Japanese as 'fire tree', as the wood was traditionally used to create fire through frictional heat. This tradition is still preserved in Shinto shrines today.
