Hibiscus - also known as rose mallow - is a genus of plants in the Malvoideae subfamily within the mallow family. There are nearly 700 species of hibiscus, which are mainly native to tropical and subtropical regions. The distinctive, bright red hibiscus flowers not only offer a delicious, fruity taste, but also contain valuable secondary plant substances including hydroxycitric acid and high levels of anthocyanins, which is characteristic of red, blue and violet flowering plants. Fruit acids are among the main components of hibiscus flowers. The most commonly researched components are those of Hibiscus sabdariffa, whose flowers contain citric, malic and tartaric acids. Valuable phytonutrients such as pectins and polysaccharides are extracted from the petals.
