L-Methylfolate
Technically speaking, folate does not occur naturally. The folate used in many nutritional supplements is an artificial, synthetic agent which cannot be found in nature or directly utilised by the body.
Synthetic folate must be first converted into active folate by the body before taking effect. Folate conversion can be especially difficult for those with inherited metabolic disorders, because it requires various cofactors and enzymes. The naturally active form of folate is known as L-methylfolate (L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate or L-5-MTHF). We use this form of folate because it is highly bioavailable and can be directly utilised by the body.
The geometric variant R-methylfolate, which exists along with L-methylfolate, cannot be utilised by the body. Many active ingredients contain a combination of these two forms as they appear together in most production processes. Common forms of methylfolate can contain up to 50% of these ineffective variants.
Magnafolate® Pro
The patented ingredient Magnafolate® Pro is a highly bioavailable L-methylfolate in the form of (6S)-L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which is bonded with calcium salt in a special crystallised form which ensures an extremely high absorption rate of the active ingredient L-5-MTHF. As a result, 76% of the folate is absorbed into the blood via first-pass absorption and can even pass the blood-brain barrier. The absorption of active L-methylfolate varies between individuals, and an individual's metabolism, as well as the form, purity and stability of a salt, can play a major role in this. Folate supplements bonded with other calcium or glucosamine compounds are not absorbed by the body in the same way as Magnafolate® type C calcium salt. The effect, however, is personal. With at least 99.9% purity of the active (6S)-isomer of L-methylfolate, combined with its stability, Magnafolate® Pro is the best quality folate active ingredient on the market.
Purity
The product was produced according to the highest quality and purity standards in the EU. It is gluten- and lactose-free, non-GMO, and vegan. The only additive is sprouted buckwheat powder.
