The clove thrives in regions of the central plateau of Sri Lanka. This region of the tropical climate zone with a high rainfall rate provides the ideal growing conditions for this native spice plant. The clear, humid and hot air and the nutrient-rich soil result in the full development of valuable natural ingredients and flavours in the plant, such as eugenol, eugenyl acetate or beta-caryophyllene. The clove buds are harvested when the petals change colour from olive green to yellow-pink. The flower clusters are harvested by hand together with the stems. The bud and stem are separated, sun-dried and distilled using gentle steam distillation.

The clove tree (Eugenia caryophyllus) belongs to the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and originally comes from the spice islands, the Moluccas in South-East Asia. It is an evergreen tree with a height of up to 12 metres. It produces long, pointed leathery leaves and aromatic yellowish-green, later red flowers in umbels. The intensely aromatic clove is a popular spice and remedy in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. It is often used as a household remedy for toothache due to the anaesthetic effect of the natural component eugenol.
